Beethoven and his first love
When Dr. Carmen von Nell-Breuning speaks of her ancestors, to her it sounds like an ordinary family story. For everyone else, here in Kasel at the Dominikaner Weingut von Nell-Breuning, a musical journey back in time to Ludwig van Beethoven begins: the young Beethoven grows up with the von Breuning family, and his first great youthful love is Eleonore, the family's daughter.

At the Dominikaner Weingut C. von Nell-Breuning, you will find a place with a remarkable history and a great family tradition, reflected in the estate's gallery of ancestral portraits. Dr. Carmen von Nell-Breuning undoubtedly has a gift for Riesling of a special kind. The Ruwer Valley, a side valley of the Mosel near Trier, is fascinating, with its distinctive microclimate: as a late-ripening variety, Riesling finds sufficient moisture here, no excessive heat and hillside sites with the right exposure.
Since Dr. Carmen von Nell-Breuning took the helm from her parents, an even more determined move towards biodynamics and natural practices has become apparent. Nutrients come from nature, and she maintains the single-stake vine training typical of the Mosel with care and consistency. Yields are geared towards quality, not quantity. And the results in the cellar repay every one of these careful steps two- and threefold.
The journey follows the Mosel upstream from the Rhine all the way to Trier, a city thousands of years old. Then you turn off into the Ruwer Valley. The drive from Trier to Kasel takes less than 10 minutes. Barely have you passed the sign marking the entrance to Kasel when you can already see the estate's seemingly endless history on the right-hand side of the road. There is also a restaurant and the option of staying overnight in rooms dating from the 16th century.

But a trip away from the Mosel into the Ruwer Valley is also worthwhile. Whether hiking through the vineyards or visiting the estate, everywhere you sense how lovely a German wine region and its people can be, and how much passion goes into creating next year's pleasures here. And those who make a special effort may catch a glimpse of the venerable old stone chambers beneath the estate - where Ludwig and Eleonore may well have whispered to one another, holding hands, hundreds of years ago.
